About Bodkin
Why we exist
Bodkin was built on a simple idea. Design should make things clearer, not louder.
We work with organisations at moments of change. New ventures. Shifts in direction. Periods of growth. Times when what exists no longer reflects what the company has become.
Our role is to bring clarity to that moment and shape something that feels coherent, confident and built to last.
We are not interested in decoration. We are interested in decisions.
How we think
Good work begins long before anything visual appears.
It starts with understanding context. The constraints. The ambition. The tension between where you are and where you want to be.
From there, we design systems rather than one-off solutions. Identities that scale. Websites that evolve. Products that make sense to the people using them.
The result is work that feels measured and assured. Not because it is restrained for the sake of it, but because every decision has a reason behind it.
The name
In traditional letterpress printing, a bodkin is a small precision tool used to adjust individual pieces of type. It is not the most visible part of the process, but it is essential to getting things right.
That idea has always resonated with us.
Most of the impact in design comes from careful adjustments. Alignment. Spacing. Tone. Structure. The things that are easy to overlook but impossible to ignore when they are wrong.
That is the role we play.
The people behind Bodkin
Bodkin is led by James Ward, Founder and Creative Director. Every project is shaped with senior involvement from the outset.
Around James is a small, focused team of designers and collaborators who share the same approach to clarity, craft and detail.
We keep the studio intentionally tight. The people you meet are the people doing the work.
James Ward
Founder & Creative Director
James founded Bodkin to build a design studio grounded in clarity, rigour and long-term thinking. With over a decade of experience across brand, digital and product design, he has worked with early-stage ventures and established organisations navigating moments of change. His approach is shaped by research, structure and a strong respect for craft.
He leads every project with senior involvement from the outset, making sure strategic thinking and detail are held to the same standard. For James, good design is not decoration, but a series of deliberate decisions that stand up over time.
Harry Richards
Designer
Harry brings a thoughtful, craft-led approach to identity work, with a particular strength in typography and visual composition. Before joining Bodkin full-time, he built a strong freelance practice, developing a body of work known for its clarity, restraint and typographic confidence.
At Bodkin, he applies that same level of care across brand and digital projects, helping shape work that feels both distinctive and well judged. He is precise, considered and deeply invested in getting the details right.
Dave Smith
Software Engineer
Dave leads development at Bodkin, bringing a creative-first mindset to the way websites and digital products are built. He works closely with the design team to make sure ideas translate into experiences that not only look right, but perform properly and hold together under real use.
His strength lies in combining technical rigour with design sensitivity. The result is development work that feels robust, efficient and carefully made, without losing sight of the thinking behind the interface.
Alex Arroyo-Trott
Designer
Alex is a key part of Bodkin’s identity and digital work, bringing a sharp visual sensibility and a disciplined approach to structure and layout. With a particular strength in typography and composition, he has a talent for turning strategic thinking into work that feels clear, confident and well resolved.
His background across fashion, branding and digital gives him a broad visual range, while his attention to detail keeps the work precise. He brings fresh energy to the studio and plays an important role in shaping both brand systems and interface design.
Hollie Marsh
Designer
Hollie brings an exploratory, hands-on approach to design, balancing structure with experimentation. Her work often introduces subtle illustrative and hand-drawn elements that add warmth and character, while still feeling coherent and considered.
She is instinctive, curious and confident testing different routes when a project calls for it. That openness makes her a valuable part of the team, particularly on work that benefits from a more expressive or unexpected visual angle.
Josh Allen
UI/UX Designer
Josh works across product and interface design, with a particular interest in complex systems and user journeys. He approaches UX with curiosity and rigour, taking time to understand behaviour, flows and functionality before shaping solutions.
His strength is in translating research and product thinking into interfaces that feel clear, intuitive and well structured. He brings order to complexity and helps ensure digital products are as usable as they are well designed.
Harry the dog
Harry is the calm heart of the studio. Gentle, good-natured and usually somewhere close by, he brings a little extra warmth to daily life at Bodkin and has a habit of quickly winning over clients and visitors alike.
When he is not asleep under a desk, he is usually out exploring the nearby fields. A steady presence, a good listener, and easily the least demanding member of the team.
How we work with clients
We prefer collaboration over presentation theatre.
You will not be handed a surprise at the end of a long process. You will be involved in shaping the thinking. We ask questions early. We test ideas openly. We challenge when needed.
Our clients tend to value clarity and honesty. They are building something they care about and want a partner who treats it with the same level of seriousness.
That mutual respect is what produces the best work.
What we care about
Clarity over cleverness. Substance over surface. Systems over one-off moments. Long-term value over quick wins.
These are not slogans. They are practical decisions we make every day.
Where we are
Bodkin is based in Bath and works with clients across the UK and beyond.
Being rooted here matters. Bath has a long history of craft and considered design. We try to bring that same sense of care to modern digital and brand challenges.
If you are curious
If you are building something new, reshaping something established, or simply feel that what you have no longer reflects who you are, we would be glad to talk.
