YakChat are the world-leader of integrated SMS functionality for workplace comunication apps such as Microsoft Teams and Webex. They enhance and extend the communication and collaboration power of these apps with interactive SMS, integrating 2-way SMS for companies and their customers.
Bodkin assisted YakChat in developing a brand that distinguishes itself from competitors, presenting an appealing and contemporary B2B solution to potential clients. We then embarked on the substantial and ongoing endeavor of refining their UI and UX, designing their multi-platform messaging and admin applications to ensure their complex and feature-rich products are intuitive and user-friendly.
To invigorate the B2B brand, we steered the company away from the commonplace blues and greens typically used by their competitors and other messaging apps. Instead, we focused on infusing personality into their already fun and quirky business name, giving the brand a distinctive and lively identity.
The concept behind the logo was to cleverly integrate a 'Yak' into the 'Chat' by forming an illustration of a yak character using three chat bubbles. The result is a simple yet memorable and effective icon. We chose a confident and visually striking color palette that pushes boundaries in the marketplace, ensuring the graphics make a lasting impression.
For the typographic voice and the YakChat wordmark, we selected the GT Ultra font by GrilliType, whose elegant 'flicks' at the ends of the letters resonate with the logo icon, extending the visual theme of speech bubbles throughout the brand's presence.
For the YakChat products, we developed an intuitive interface through extensive prototyping, research, and experimentation. This process was supported by a coherent set of design rules and principles, along with a core set of components defined in The Yak Design System that we created. After establishing the foundational design and design system, we collaborated closely with the development team to transition the product from concept to market launch and beyond. Leveraging our own frontend development skills, we constructed the YakChat iOS and Android apps and also contributed to creating the design system component set upon which the rest of the products were built.
